BMD-2
The BMD-2 is a Soviet PfV first introduced in 1985, armed with a 30mm 2A42 machine gun, a 7.62mm machine gun and, for anti-tank purposes, a 9M111 or 9M113 ATGM. The armour is that expected of a welded aluminium alloy vehicle with a 15 mm thick front plate at an angle of 78°. However, in combination with the 240 hp engine, the result is an excellent power/tonne ratio of 29.2 hp per tonne at full load.
History
During the Soviet-Afghan War, the Soviets used the infantry fighting vehicles BMP-1 and BMD-1, which were equipped with a 73 mm smoothbore 2A28 cannon, as well as the BCP 9M14 Malyutka. While these weapons were sufficient to deal with tanks, the enemy the Soviets faced had nothing comparable. The mujahideen often used fortified positions and unarmored vehicles, and in the mountains the 73 mm Thunder was even less useful because of its low elevation angles.
From 1981, the Soviet Army received the BMP-2, which used a new 30 mm automatic 2A42 cannon. Not only did it allow suppressive fire, but it also had a much better elevation angle that allowed it to fire at aircraft or infantrymen flying at low altitudes in the valleys or mountains.
BMD-1 in Afghanistan
When the Soviet troops saw the effectiveness of the BMP-2 in the air, they decided to equip their units with something similar. They already had the BMD-1, a lighter version of the BMP-1 in the air, but the problem was that the hull of the BMD-1 was too small for the BMP-2 turret. It was decided to design one vehicle to meet the need for a new infantry fighting vehicle, while another, later named BMD-3, was developed. After being tested in 1985. The BMD-2 went into production. However, the 73mm 2A28 has nearly 15 times the explosive power of the 30mm 2A42, making it better suited for destruction purposes. Thus, BMD-2 did not replace BMD-1, but complemented it.
BMD-2 has since served in the Air Force during the Russo-Georgian War and in the Ukrainian Air Force during the Donbass War.
